Bahamas!

It's kinda hard to look at these pictures as it's rainy AFTER Memorial Day weekend here... We had the most amazing time in the Bahamas last week. We stayed on Paradise Island next to Atlantis at the One & Only Ocean Club. The weather was great and we swam in the pools, rode bikes, jet skied, built sand castles, had dinner on the beach, swam with dolphins, ate great food and had a blast as a family and with our good friends. When can we go back?!?!

a trend on arrival this trip...

The view- we jumped right in before even unpacking (a big deal for me :)

Traveling with kids- sure can't travel light!

Me and Janie girl hit the beach

Doo-rags at dinner

Fishing trip with Dad. Heff claims it was his highlight of 2011 as both girls caught tons of fish (hey wait- Janie was born in 2011 Heff- you better change that statement to Q2-2011 or something!!) but this trip get's it's own post, not only did they have a blast Heff took great pictures!

I'm not making these pictures any larger ;) but had to remember how I spent half the day... even the baby-proofed pool was still beautiful!

Jet skis were a big hit- Heff took both girls at once and they went "100 miles fast" as Francie says

Maisie could play all day in the sand entertaining herself

Checking out the main pools

landed at the kids pool (sorry couldn't help the matching outfit with Janie :)

Doting on baby sister

"Mom, you think they know how to make a Shirley Temple here?"

"I don't know France but they make a mean Bahama-Mama!"

Where's Janie? Naptime on the beach is the best

My Little Mermaid

"Is that my Strawberry Grouper?!" They cooked up the fish the girls caught and it was DEElish!

READY to swim with the dolphins

They asked if Janie needed a wetsuit to swim! Um, probably not since she's 3 months old :)

Let's do this! (sorry- the real dolphin pictures still have to wait!!!)

But I can show you the SeaLion we met

Kinda gross.

I have so many pictures to go through and blog! It's nice to be back home but we are all back to work/life full force. Heff had to go to LA today for a few hours, I've had Bumble meetings back to back and the girls are rolling with it as usual-

We were all glad to see Emmy this morning for a trip to Shoup on the trike!

More pics later, including Francie's adventure swimming with dolphins... but here is one blurry camera phone picture of the Triple Threat in heart PJ's :)

Happy Birthday Dad! (via Baby Ann)

Today is my Dad's birthday! My little sister showed us all up and wrote a really cute post on her blog about my dad - I could't have said it better myself- but did manage to dig up a few more old pictures of my dear old dad (and mom!) to add to the mix. Happy Birthday Dad - I love you too!

Happy Birthday Dad! (by Baby Ann)

Today is my Dad’s Birthday! And this is my favorite picture of him from our wedding. I thought I’d share some things about him that crack me up and things that I love about him. There are a few things I’ve heard him say all my life that I’ll call "John Simo-isms".

1. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox. (This may seem like useless knowledge. But you should have seen the heads spin around when this tidbit FINALLY came in handy in high school religion class when the teacher asked β€œHow do we know what day Easter Sunday falls on?”)

2. No skylarking. (That’s lawyer-speak for goofing-around. I think this was on a sign posted in the house after we got our trampoline as kids. Thanks for the early vocab lessons, came in handy on those SAT’s)

3. Never sit on a curb. (An obvi, but a goodie)

4. What kind of a MORON…
a) Rides their bike/runs in the dark.
b) Goes on vacation to camp.
c) Does anything unsafe (not wearing seatbelt, smokes, does drugs, lets children wear jewelry that they could strangle themselves with, etc.)

5. The door is not a toy. (door slamming when we were kids)

6. Dogs belong outdoors (all animals for that matter)

then what was this all about?! Kidding- we all know he has a big soft spot- even for the dogs!

7. I never missed a day of school in my life until Law School (it’s true)

8. Don’t buy cheap wine (this came in handy when I was in college buying Rombauer on the credit card…hey, I was just following the rules)

at his Fortieth surprise birthday party - are you flipping the bird dad?!

9. Just because you got it on sale doesn’t mean you saved money (my mom and I tried to argue against this so many times and he never quite saw our β€œbut we SAVED hundreds” point)

10. You can always bargain. (My dad tried to bargain for a sweater at Bloomingdale’s when I was in 8th grade and my mom sent him with me to pick it up for Christmas…slightly humiliating? Yes. Did the woman then ask if we had a Bloomies card and give us 10% off? Yes. Dad won)

11. Ask your mother. (Jannie was the authority on curfews, sleepovers and other teenage rules)

12. You must wear shoes unless you are in the shower or in bed. (Followed by: If you hurt your feet barefoot I’m not going to feel bad for you/pay the medical bill).

you can barely tell, but notice the shoes on - even on the beach!

13. Last but definitely not least: Always sign and date everything.

These are the ones that come to mind right now but I’m pretty sure I could fill a book with my dad’s advice/quotes. These 13 don’t really tell you everything about my Dad, although they make me laugh.

John Simo (as he is referred to by extended family, partly because there are 3 Johns) is honestly the best father any children could ask for. He is without a doubt the hardest working person I have ever known. He gets up early, works late and has never once made even the slightest complaint about it. My siblings and I grew up with everything we could need or want and learned so much from him about hard work, and being a good parent (with my wonderful mom). He also taught us all a thing or two about cutting loose with family, friends, good wine and always great food.

He is generous and really funny (my sister said in her wedding speech that I got his dry sense of humor and I take that as quite a compliment). One thing Pat noticed right away about my dad when he met him (and something I have always really appreciated) is that he is incredibly accepting. He welcomes people into his home like they were family and really gets along with anyone, regardless of their background. And Pat knows, just as I’m sure that Brian and Emily do, that John Simo is pretty much the best father-in-law you could possibly be blessed with.

John Simo with his MIL - Marmar!

He is also modest and GREAT at his job. He’s worked as a lawyer since he graduated from Hasting’s in 1973. I wouldn’t recommend getting in an argument with him and I would be nervous if he was on the other side of a lawsuit.

John and Jan with Baby Ann

His speech at our wedding was incredible. It was really funny, included some history, embarrassed me slightly, and was a very sweet blessing dedicated to Pat and I. One day I will find those notes he scribbled on his legal pad and try to write down everything he said because it was priceless.

Last but not least, he is really smart and knowledgeable about SO many things. If you are ever on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, you definitely want John Simo as your phone a friend. Unless it’s about pop culture. Then you want me. But really, I would call my dad for the answer to everything from cleaning the gutters to historical facts to cooking a great steak to β€œmy car is making this noise what do I do?”

I could not ask for a better father and he is such a wonderful Grandfather to my nieces. Our kids will be so lucky to get to spend time with him and be spoiled by him one day.

Happy birthday, Dad! I love you.

Good work ABA...

and I have to add a few things about the best dad I know.

I always remember my dad behind a camera when we were little capturing all our little life events. I'm so thankful for that now Dad and think that's where I got my excessive photo-documentation skills… TG for digital!

My Dad loves his babies- and I love how cute he is with my girls and how special he makes them feel. They love their Grampa too!

Roadtrips! My dad will drive anywhere anytime… even when he is working miles and miles away instead of staying at a hotel he drives home to his family every night. And made us endure lots and lots of family road trips in the Volvo.

My Dad doesn't have a lot of hobbies- except being with his family and working hard. His free time is always spent with us and I know I am thankful for all those weekends building forts, working on the house or just hanging out with our parents.

and what a good sport- his surprise 40th also consisted of a trip to Disneyland where none of us had ever been- including him. We told him on the way to the airport. He thought it was a gag-gift… but never complained!

and Dad- you really showed us all how to have good relationships with the way you were always so kind, loving and thoughtful to mom. You surprised us every year with the antique store finds for christmas gifts and always gave her a big hug and a kiss when you got home from work. thanks for setting such a good example of a loving relationship (you too mom :)

we all love you for being so funny!

WE LOVE YOU DAD!!! Thanks for being the greatest dad ever - through all these years and still today.

PS- DAD was this really you?! Must have been those law school working-as-a-bouncer, motorcycle-riding, construction-high-rise-working, hitchhiking days you never ever wanted us to hear about- goes against rules 1-13 above for sure!!

Super Pooper!

Janie sometimes gets fussy, although she has been A LOT better lately, especially on vacation ;) but Heff and I wondered if her tummy bothers her since she (TMI warning) only poops about once a week. Dr Cisco says she just has an efficient/slow system and it's ok, but we could try some probiotics to help her little tummy out. We finally got some and started giving her the probiotic powder on the trip- well the second time we gave it to her, she finished nursing and I set her on this chair... Heff yelled inside for me TWO minutes later and was like "UH Mare, I think it worked!" Boy did it ever :) She had a serious ring-around-the-belly 360 degrees- her first huge blowout of her life! Sorry Janie, but we had to document, at least you still manage to look cute !

Catching Up on Life at Home

a few random updates from last week at home…

Francie says "Safety First...and Second!" One day Francie wore this to the park with Emmy. Yup- her helmet AND life jacket. Just in case she felt the need to ride her bike through the creek I guess?!

and Maisie was inspired to wear her "goggles" too. Is it bad I was happy Emmy was the one taking them to the park that day?! She said she got some great looks from the other moms:) Just kidding- I love my quirky girls!

Good work France. Making your father and grandfather very proud.

Uh-oh. BIG uh-oh. Jannie has been working on these cute knit vests for the girls and when I was gone last week she had Francie wear her's home one day. Then Jannie called me and said "can you bring Francie's vest back over? I need to see the size- oh and don't ever put them through the wash." Uhhhh… everything in our house goes off the body and (hopefully skips the floor) down the laundry shoot to the wash! and sure enough… that's Francie's on the right next to Maisie's "felted" after a hot water bath! SORRY Jannie!!!

Maisie's new favorite lounge spot- the swing Janie doesn't love like I thought she would :)

Janie got a mani! I went for a mani-pedi with Christian and the girls commented on how Janie's baby nails were too long- I tried ot cut them last week and cut her little thumb so I'd been putting it off. They offered with a brand new/sterile pair of cuticle clippers so we distracted her and got them cut nice and short :)

"They are way better than you are at that Mom"

and I'm still plugging away at the Bumble opening and all the details involved in running a restaurant. We had a few more tastings with potential chefs and some delicious ideas for the menu

and our awesome contractor Rich Cody of Cody-Brock and his team are hard at work getting the build out done!! Still lots to do but we see major progress every day and are hoping we'll have the construction done in 6 weeks or so!!!

Sun!

What's up with the late-May rain Bay Area? We escaped for a family vacation in the sun… lots of swimming, playing Uno and breaking out the triple matching outfits ;) Thanks for the cute blue tunics and embroidered pants Oma! And Happy 4 month birthday Janie-Jane! (oh and guess with the 18th bday trend means I have to note- 25 months for Maisie and 44 months Francie(oops;) - yes I just put myself in the crazy mom category when you count your kids' ages in months after 2… oops, I blame the poolside Margaritas)

poolside bassinet baby - she even got to swim for the first time!

and love the "Cheesy-cheese" face Francie.

Playhouse Morning

Saturday morning we were all up way too early (jet lag still hanging in there!) so we convinced Heff to let us all come to his barber with him. He goes to the "Silly Cuban" old school barber in Palo Alto where you just wait in line... and there is always a line! By the time we got there at 8:31 he had been open for 1 minute and had a two hour line. crazy :) So we skipped the haircut and went to the mall to check out all the new Dreams Happen playhouses... the auction is coming up June 4 (six years to the date of the night we met at the auction!) There are some cool ones this year!!

Pancakes at the Creamery for breakfast

Menlo Park Firehouse playhouse (raffle house... wanna buy a ticket?!)

One of our favorites- Christian was a designer on this one! the E-I-E-I-O barn

another favorite

who needs a playhouse?! Come bid June 4!

Happy Monday!

Here are the girls piled in my bed Sunday morning after Daddy had to go into work early. We texted him this picture so he would feel guilty and hurry home :) We had a BUSY weekend -a Rehearsal Dinner and Wedding for our good friends Ryan and Eloise Friday and Saturday night which were both beautiful and really fun events. Then a wedding shower for Annie who is marrying Gary Machado this summer on SUnday in Los Gatos - busy busy but excited for all the weddings and newleyweds we know!

Gary's Mom and Granda with Janie (hi Gary, love that you are actually a blog follower!)

Annie opening her gifts- her first shower and she was a pro :)

Jannie and Janie!

First Trip to the Dentist

April 7 (blog post delays!) the girls had their first trip to the dentist. I'm noticing lots of advantages to the girls being close in age- efficiency! Francie went a little late and Maisie was a little early for the suggested 3 year appointment but we knocked it out in one morning. We love our dentist Dr. Frank Altick in Palo Alto- I've been going since I was three!

Francie loving anything big girls do.

And Maisie was along for the ride but got her toofers checked out too

and multi-tasking as usual- nursing while teeth cleaning ;)
