Saturday Moving and Building Madness

Saturday morning we woke up to bagels and mimosas in our new house!

We have very nice friends to be so thoughtful and bring us goodies- Courtney knows me too well with this amazing toaster she gave us- it is so cool, feeds my love for all things gadgety :)

and if this weekend of moving couldn't get any crazier- Saturday was National Rebuilding Day for Rebuilding Together and Heff had taken on his own project this year!! He was up and out the door at 5am- the first guy at Home Depot and on the job to help our friend "Forrest" gain warmth, safety and independence living alone in his home. Heff has been working on this project all month and we are so proud of him for taking this on. The girls and I went by to bring the crew pizza at lunch...

Francie showing off her new red Keen's Jannie gave her

Then back home to entertain the troops! We had Craig, Andrea, Isabel and Thomas staying with us for a short weekend Friday night and Saturday. Jannie came over and we all took our first walk down to Shoup Park- even Ollie got to come.

and THEN... home to unpack a little more, see the LA Heff's off to their baptism in the east bay, and head out to Oracle Parkway for the Rebuilding Together BBQ! Heff, Forrest and Susie

Seriously every time we get to a party like this the bounce house goes down right before her very eyes

Luckily, she found some big girls to watch. Imitating their every move:

and back home for more of this:

and our first time being at our home as a family! Even though it was madness to have so much going on in one day- we feel so blessed to be in our new home- warm, safe and with our little family- it was nice to remember how lucky we are and to help out someone else who needed it that day. Heff had to do all the hard work- thanks for sharing the experience with us love and we are so proud of you. :)

Moving In

We didn't waste any time and got into our new house the minute we could :)

Wednesday night we did a final walk through before we got the keys. Maisie making sure the floors are clean with her blankie

We found three leftover beers in the fridge- perfect for a celebratory cheers! (Uncle Donald was driving through town and came by to check out the house with us)

empty kitchen

and finally, officially, moving in! We took as much stuff as we could fit in my suburban, Jannie's suburban, and Heff's truck in two trips over ourselves and slept on the living room floor in sleeping bags!

Ode To Our Old House

We made a big move for our little family. I know I've been keeping the blog readers in suspense without internet for the past five days so here is the story. (part I in this post- I mean 5 days without internet is a lot to catch up on!)

We loved our little house on McKendry where Brian (and Katherine!) lived while we were dating, I moved into when we got married, we remodeled together, built and re-built up the backyard for parties, brought Francie home from the hospital, brought Maisie home from the hospital and started our family together. It will always be such a special place for us and we loved our neighbors. We were only 1.5 miles from work, less than a mile from my parents and I have to say it again- we LOVED our neighbors!! BUT it was a little house and we were quickly outgrowing it- "busting at the seams" as Heff says.

When Heff bought 369 McKendry Drive 7 years ago, it looked like this:

and when I met him three years later he had already improved it to this! (wonder why our neighbors like us as much as we like them? ;)

together we continued to fix it up with lots of weekend projects- we remodeled the kitchen the week we got back from our honeymoon- and did it ourselves in two weeks with only an electrician to do the final wiring! We put in gardens, fences, gates, playhouses, chickens, BBQ's, new lawns and so much more. We sure love this house and it has been a labor of love to work on it together over the years.

Here is Heff building the front picket fence when I was pregnant w Francie)

We made a nursery for our first baby. I know- I thought for sure it would be a boy! and we changed that nursery when SHE was 6 months old- had to pink it up!

We brought home MaryFrances September 22, 2007

and we left our house for the hospital to have Maisie- last time as a family of three! (still looking for the photo of bringing home Maisie- poor second child!)

We weren't even really serious about looking for a bigger house yet. It seemed too scary and we figured we could live in our little house (with one bathroom:) for a couple more years and be ok. At Christmas- we came home from Red Bluff with a car full of new toys/stuff and were kind of depressed as we looked around like "where do we put this stuff?!" and it seems crazy to me that 4 months later - we are in a new home. I guess you never know how things will play out! But we found a house we fell in love with and after months of thinking, talking, offering, countering... we got the house!

so we started packing up.

One box at a time

Good thing I had helpers

Some photos of our "old house" right before I started packing up- yup, busting at the seams.

our little blue room- never could bring myself to take the bassinet out (or really maybe just didn't know where to put it!)

and Heff's big weekend job - cleaning up, organizing and packing "his" garage

wow

Satisfaction

Oh yeah- and we had a garage sale! I love a good garage sale :) we cleared out a bunch of stuff and made a whopping $314 in change. Heff says it would have been way easier to take the tax write off and donate it all but what fun would that have been!? Plus- Francie go to earn quarters selling some old toys and she put each one in her tool belt around her waist. Little bargainer.

The best part of the garage sale was when we put the leftover crap out on the curb and posted it as FREE on Craigslist. This guy showed up- was ecstatic to find an old Santa suit (from when we had santa on an adirondack chair on the roof) and he put the whole thing on, got back in his truck with wife and kid and drove away as Santa.

even Maisie, from her favorite perch in the old house- thinks this guy is nuts

Jannie came over Thursday and said "It's moving day!" we were waiting for the call to say we actually closed!

holy stuff

"last meal" in her little chair ;) (where are all the Francie picks when I am packing up!? smart girl was probably hiding in her playhouse so she didn't get put to work)

oh there she is- pouting on top of boxes in Jannie's car(she was REALLY sad to leave Emma & Owen :(

a little cranky

my car (the day we closed we moved all the little stuff ourselves- movers came next morning!)

Happy husband- and I have to give him credit for being so willing to move/lift/just DO when I wanted to get in the new house the first second we could! Thanks Heff- sorry you didn't marry someone patient :)

and then WE MOVED!!! To be continued...

We've Moved!

We closed on a new house Thursday and moved in that day! We are so happy to have a little more room and to be able to call this beautiful house our new home. No Internet til Tuesday so I can't blog all the pictures and the details yet. I just unpacked the last box and have been organizing and putting things away. My favorite activity :) Lots of new shelf paper, cleaning supplies and empty boxes around here today!!

Sunny Dresses

Jannie brought the girls back these cute little sun dresses from a shop in NYC.
I love them! Just some pics (for all of you who don't like to read the "words" anyway :)

Francie's hair is long enough for a pony! Can you tell she LOVES it when you mess with her hair?

Ready... 1... 2... 3...

JUMP!

thanks Jannie!

and today- April 22. Today is a big day...
(Maisie says "WHATCHYOU you talking about mom?") --- to be continued...

Did I Tell You She's ONE?

More pictures of Maisie's big first birthday- the real day of.

We went to lunch at a new burger place called Sliders. They have... you guessed it. Lots of sliders. They were delish! And Maisie split a milkshake with her sister.

Only she likes to blow bubbles in her straw. No a good idea with a large choc shake.

Francie is really into being a "tiny baby" and talking baby talk - probably because Maisie is getting all the birthday attention!

and Mini Cheesecakes for dessert! "Here Dad- it's your favorite."

Then home to play and enjoy the Sunday around the house

Wait... who's one? "I AM! I AM!"

Tough Love

Then we walked downtown Palo Alto for dinner- just the four of us (when Francie asked why no one came to Maisie's birthday) We had an easy dinner at Pluto's.

Why do they all look so surprised here?

Maisie entertained us giving big hugs after dinner:

and a little frozen yogurt for dessert

Happy REAL Birthday Maisie Moo. Welcome to ONE!

Movie Night

Our neighbor Alexa invited Francie over for a movie night the other night. She loves playing with Alexa and got in her favorite Mickey PJ's (those things are def not flammable) for her date.

It was funny to watch her learn to take social cues... she kept telling me she only wanted to watch Nemo at Alexa's house and when we got over Alexa said "Let's watch the Princess and the Frog!!!" and Alexa's mom asked her to give Francie a few options since she was her guest. So Alexa says "Well... we have Up. We have Nemo. and we have THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG!!! What do you want to watch!?"

Francie looks at me, back at Alexa and says "I want to watch the Princess and The Frog."

only the previews and they are glued to the screen! I told Francie to put her arm around Alexa and she does this:

I'm ONE!

"WHAT? I don't get to be "months" anymore?!"

Nope. You are ONE YEAR OLD Maisie Moo. And we love you! Although we spent Sunday- her birthday- cleaning up the house and checking things off the to-do list, so Maisie kinda got jipped on celebrations on her birthday. We walked downtown Palo Alto for dinner after hanging out just the four of us all day and Francie says "Mom! Dad! No one came to Maisie's birthday!!"

All she cares about is that her sister lets her participate in her shenanigans...

"I didn't HEAR you ask us not to dump out every toy you had just organized in the toy basket Mom." Uh-huh.

and sometimes Francie likes to "be the baby" and get in the crib with her sister- who gets to play "the mommy." Poor second child- always gets told what to do and better like it.

Silly girls

"Hey it's my birthday! Get me out!!"

Maisie is getting better at walking- but loves to scoot along the cabinets and try to get into whatever she can. PLEASE don't look at the finger prints and dirt on the door here. I just got the Windex out.

"My sister calls this one the chemical cabinet. Hummm, locked."

on to the next one...

Jackpot.

and she's in

Next time I am going to tape some Swiffer sheets all over her. Should do the trick.

and a couple little videos of Maisie Shark still learning how to put one foot in front of the other:

This one from my parents house Saturday night when my dad made dinner for us and the Carters (have to upload those pics!)

and this was last week hanging out one morning: they might call CPS for man-handling a baby trying to make her walk

Maisie's Birthday Dinner

Last Thursday night we had a little party at Bistro Vida to celebrate Maisie turning ONE! Her real birthday was Sunday- but Oma & Opa were in town Thursday night so it seemed like a good night to celebrate. We missed Jannie who was in NYC with Baby Ann but Grampa was there for them both. We got a sitter for the kids at BB and had a nice dinner- with Maisie as the guest of honor.

The perfect way to celebrate a FIRST birthday- champagne for mom and her first bottle of whole milk for Maisie!

The Heff's (not a great picture of any of us!)

and who better than her god-mom to serve up her first bottle! She took it like a champ (well- it took awhile but she drank from a bottle!)

We got a babysitter at Brilliant Babies (3 doors down from the restaurant) to play with the kids while we ate- Maisie ended up staying with us almost the whole time but she was the birthday girl afterall!

The Komo's

Christian and her baby Shark

The grandparents with the girls

Silly Little Maisie Moo

The girls side of the table- Lindsey, Christian and Cat

We played pass the baby bottle (with baby attached)- good party game

Dad's turn

Happy Birthday Maisie! Lucky Little Girl

My "camo-wearing, pick-up driving, hunting fanatic"!

Pat described my husband perfectly in what he wrote about Heff as a groomsman on their wedding website. (Pat was still doing his homework when I posted the last blog about their wedding- this just in:)

"Brian Heffernan ~ Groomsman:
If you put all of the groomsmen in a lineup and had to pick which one was from the South, most would go with Heff. He is a big, camo-wearing, pick-up driving, hunting fanatic that would fit right in with a lot my friends that I grew up with. Brian is a partner in a real estate-focused law firm in Menlo Park, CA and is the proud father of the famous Francie, 2 and Maisie, 1. Brian is married to Ann's older sister Mary and it has been a lot of fun spending time with him and his great family."

Good work Pat :) For hitting the nail on the head and for marrying my sister!

And speaking of my "camo-wearing, pick-up driving, hunting fanatic" husband- the guys have added another partner to their law firm! Bill Frimel is a great guy and a great addition to their office. And it means I get to spend more time with his fun wife Susie! Here are our favorite lawyers at 1075 Curtis Street-

Real Estate: Pacific Sun Gourmet's Extra Virgin Olive Oil Kudos:

We're proud to report that HS&F client Pacific Sun Gourmet's Tehama County Blend extra virgin olive oil got some mighty nice publicity recently. Cook's Illustrated's September-October 2009 issue reviewed ten well-regarded California extra virgin olive oil products, and the Cook's experts concluded that only four merited their coveted "Recommended" status. Alas, Pacific Sun Gourmet olive oil was among the chosen four.

Olive oil tasting is quickly gaining as a major event that's become popular with "foodies". And California olive oils, for years overshadowed by Spanish, Greek and Italian producers, are starting to command real respect among afficionados.

Pacific Sun Gourmet's olive oil was found by Cook's Illustrated's tasters to be "... buttery... smooth... with a fruity aroma... notes of passion fruit, pineapple and melon... with a nutty finish... like walnuts." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. And, we might add, it pairs well with aubergines. More about Pacific Sun Gourmet

A New Twist On "Flipping":

We were intrigued by a recent story in the New York Times of a large New York real estate portfolio owned by three brothers for many years. The oldest brother unexpectedly decided that he wanted to operate independently of his two brothers. A provision in their six-page partnership agreement permitted any of the three brothers to withdraw at any time.

The agreement called for the mere flip of a coin to determine whether the withdrawing brother – or the remaining brothers – would get the right to select which properties would go to the withdrawing brother. The selections were required to reflect, in the aggregate, a pro rata share of the current market value of the withdrawing brother's 40% partnership interest. A coin was flipped, and the withdrawing brother won the toss. Read more

POTPOURRI

This may come as a surprise to many of our readers, but lawyers are subject to rigorous ethical rules and disciplinary scrutiny. We at HS&F always read with a strange mixture of fear and titillation the many California State Bar bulletins and other legal trade news which report on disbarments, suspensions and public reprimands of lawyer scofflaws, miscreants and dunderheads.

There was a recent reported case we couldn't help but share with you. It concerned a young lawyer who appeared in court on behalf of a client wearing a backwards-facing baseball cap, a dirty t-shirt and tattered jeans. When his matter was called, the judge refused to let him argue his case, and admonished him for his unkempt wardrobe. The judge told him that if he came to his court again without being suitably attired, he would be held in contempt of court.

What did the lawyer do? What else? He appealed. And what did the appeals court have to say? They strongly agreed with the lower court judge, citing abundant and long-standing authority that a judge is the master of his or her courtroom, and thus fully entitled to adopt reasonable rules of decorum, including a wardrobe code.

During our thorough due diligence on Bill Frimel, we vigorously quizzed him about his views on this topic, and are pleased to report that we've confirmed that Bill always wears a coat and tie to court. No jeans. No caps. No t-shirts.

DISCLAIMER
Aubergines is not legal advice. In fact, it's not advice of any kind. To some, it might be entertainment. To others, it might be an example of why the world's in the quirky state it's in. But don't even think about suing us over anything you read here. It would just be a waste of time.

We're proud of you Heff! And our lawyer friends who put up with us in the office on a daily basis.

Another Cousin Coming Soon...

Last week Oma and Aunt Kat were here overnight before their big adventure to the Big Apple to see Maureen, Doug and the kids for spring break. We had a fun night out to dinner with them and then Grampa and Jannie stopped by when we got home to say hi and do Jannie's famous "ring test" to see if Aunt Kat and Uncle Donald will be adding a boy or a girl to the mix of cousins in September!! The ring swung in a circle which predicts a GIRL! We'll see- they won't find out until the little Doverspike arrives. Congrats Kat & Donald!!
