Another Big Name for a Little Girl!

Are we crazy? Yes, probably :) We decided on another long name for our second little girl to carry on the family tradition. The history of all the "Marys" in our family is in
this post on Francie's name and MaryMarjorie adds to the list!

MaryMarjorie Sheehy Heffernan is named after my Great Aunt Marge, Marjorie Sheehy. She was my grandmother Mary Virginia Sheehy's only sister (they lost their little brother Gerald Sheehy when he was very young) We LOVE Aunt Marge and with all four of my grandparents gone she is the closest thing I have to a grandparent and she sure is a great substitute! Aunt Marge lives in Hollister and is full of energy... she walks every morning at 6am with the same group of ladies and made every "Big Game" (Stanford/Cal football) for almost 60 years! We love her and are so happy Maisie gets to be the namesake to a very special person.

(Francie was named after Brian's grandmother's sister too- Frances Borchard.)

Maisie in print (thanks for the pretty frame Katsy!)

Aunt Marge made the trip all the way up to Red Bluff in January 06 for our surprise "proposal party!" She stayed at my parents house the night before and I was clueless about what was going to happen the very next day- I guess Aunt Marge was nervous she might accidentally spill the beans that Heff was going to pop the question the very next day but everybody kept his secret :)

and speaking of seeing her name in print... how cute is this cookie bouquet that was delivered to our front porch yesterday from my mom's needlepoint group?! THANKS ladies, Maisie can't wait to come for tea and cookies soon!

MaryMarjorie Sheehy...

Hopefully she'll grow into the name! (the smallest size onesie is still swimming on her :)

Tuesday Playgroup

Tuesday afternoon we "Toddled-On-Over" to our Tuesday playgroup. We're trying to keep up with Francie's busy social calendar so she doesn't feel like her little sister changed her life all that much ;) Our Tuesday playgroup is a great group of mom's I meet in the baby groups when Francie was tiny. They have all been SO sweet to drop off meals since Maisie was born! We rotate houses or parks every week and it's fun to see the kids all getting so big and a few getting new little brothers or sisters like Francie! This week it was at one of the mom's who lives 3 blocks away so I loaded up the Chariot stroller and headed over.

Wagon rides

and the always popular car-cars (no fighting to be seen in this photo!)

Francie swarming around Amy and Asher for orange slices

She's still pretty jealous Alessandra had a PINK car-car ;)

Maisie's First Bath

Francie helped me give Maisie her first real bath on Tuesday morning! Her little umbilical cord fell off Monday night (found it on the couch, gross :) so we got to give her a real bath in the same froggy tub we used to give Francie her baths. Maisie loved the warm water and was especially attentive to her sister. Love that clean baby smell!

Clean those stinky toes!

Loving this "giving someone else a bath" thing...

... and losing interest ;)

Is that a 'side-grin' like Daddy Maisie?!

(similarities? This was FRANCIE at 10 days old for her first bath!)

My cute, clean girl

Maisie's First Pizza Party

Sunday night we had dinner over at my parent's house- the first outdoor pizza oven party of the season! James and Em came down from the city and my Uncle John, Kim and their kids came over to meet Maisie too. Jannie and Grampa cooked up some delicious pizza's and we sat outside while the kids played- Francie is such a big girl all off the sudden she was off on the swing set and running around with the cousins all night! I don't even think we remembered to feed her dinner! :)

Maisie all bundled up and ready to go over to her Jannie and Grampa's house for her first official Sunday Night Dinner! Jannie made her the cute cable knit hat...

"Are you gonna stop taking pictures of me and get me out of this carseat mom?"

Francie sure had fun with James, Ella and Lukey

"Weee-Haw!" on a goose? At least she's using her imagination :)

Uncle John meets Maisie (he finally got over the fact she wasn't born on his birthday)

This seasons sure-to-be-favorite-pizza (and good thing we have producing chickens!) potato and egg, yum.

Francie holding court

her new favorite thing... the pink Croc's dad bought her on a special trip to REI

Little Maisie-Moo in the "family" bassinet everyone has used since my brother James... Jannie worked hard on a new set of PINK bumpers and bassinet sheets for Maisie (it was all blue for my thought-you-were-a-boy-Francie :)

It's so cute pinked-up! Thanks Jannie!! (Maisie is wearing the same outfit we took Francie home from the hospital in, from Auntie Em! I love pulling out all the old favorite outfits of Francie's again... so does Heff;)

Sharing teddy bears with her sister (THAT is real love :)

Time to wheel these girls on home to bed

Maisie's First Weekend Home

Saturday Heff was busy with National Rebuilding Day for the organization he sits on the board for, Rebuilding Together Peninsula. Every year on the third Saturday in April Rebuilding Together pulls together thousands of volunteers to revamp houses and community centers for families who own their own homes but can't afford to keep them up. It's really amazing to see how much they accomplish in a days work. This year they worked on 79 projects in the area! Heff's favorite role is "Construction Captain" of a house but this year he visited 15+ of the project sites to see how things were going. We didn't get to go with him this year... paint, mold and power tools don't mix with week old babies so well :) But he picked up Francie to go to the celebration BBQ at the end of the day!

Waking up is hard to do

Maisie-Moo on a lazy Saturday with mom and big sister

It's a good thing I could never bring myself to take down this "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" banner my mom put up when we brought Francie home from the hospital 19 months ago!! My Dad's secretary in 1978 made it for his office when I was born. I love having girls!

Francie spent the weekend helping Mom organize...

Maisie spent the weekend relaxing...

Sunday we had a family work day around the house. Dad and Francie put in our vegetable/tomato garden out back.

Francie had her first "own" Hacienda burrito... yummm.

and washed it down with some milk riding her dog "cowgurl up!"

Maisie soaked up some sun while we worked

and Francie cooled off in her fountain Dad bought her

She is a DADDY'S GIRL lately!

The girls wore themselves out and both took three hour naps from 1-4! Keep it up please :)

I got to sort clothes and set up the craigslist changing table I found for Maisie's "room" (or portion thereof ;)

and Heff finished planting (dispite Francie having knocked the entire flat of plants on the ground an hour earlier)

and finished the "west wing" on my chicken coop!

all in a hard weekends work Maisie!

The Right Choice

Emmy wrote this beautiful post on her blog "Grieving Gracefully." We sure know we made the right decision choosing a godmother for Maisie! Emmy, we love you- this is beautiful. Maisie is a very lucky little girl. (Em is wearing her mom and her great-grandmother's wedding rings)

********************

"I am touched. honored. joyous. blessed- and as my mother always said, β€œover the moon excited” that I was chosen to be Maisie’s godmother. Chosen to help guide her through life. Chosen to always be there for her. Chosen to teach her. Chosen to be a special person and a part of her life. I have to believe that my mother had a role in Maisie- for she came into my life at a time when my world was just turned upside down. Maisie brought me the gift of joy. Its Maisie that was a gift from my mother to me- A godmother I now am- how beautiful. I will give to Maisie what my mother gave to me- constant love forever and always. The day she was born, when I held her for the first time, I felt such a connection. A special bond. I felt my mother. Maisie looked at me with greater understanding- as if she knew what I was going through. Perhaps she will have a piece of my mother in her. My heart melts every time I hold her, every time I whisper in her ear β€œI love you”, and every time I look into those little eyes. She is so very special my beautiful darling. No one ever said life was ever easy- but it is definitely worth it. There are times that are so unbearably hard and I feel that I am never going to make it through- but it is the joy, the beauty, the constant love that is all around and will never fade that keeps me going-and I think to myself… What a wonderful world."

Em also took some cute photos of Francie sporting her favorite Big Sister outfit with a pink tutu to complete the look :)

Maisie says "I love you Emmy!"

The Newest Cousins

Brian's brother Mark, Sarah and Baby Clara came over for dinner Thursday night. We cooked up the meatballs Heff's good friend Johnny brought over for us just like he did when Francie was born... except this time he has his own 2 week old baby at home! We are so excited for Chrissie and Johnny and their new little girl, Maria Margurette (kind of like the italian version of MaryMarjorie huh!?) Johnny's homemade meatballs and pasta were delicious. Clara and Maisie had fun hanging out together for the first time and Sarah and I are excited to take them to baby classes and groups together soon :)

Clara and Maisie

Halloween in April!?

Holy smokes! Halloween came early to Jannie and Grampa's house this year!! Francie was a little confused in her spring dress to arrive at Jannie's and see pumpkins and spiders galore. (Pottery Barn Kids were shooting their Halloween catalogue at the Johnet's house all week) The set people let us play for awhile before they brought out the little models in the 2009 costumes... check them out next season, they've got some good ones this year!

Francie and Maisie helped test the lighting equipment- they're not as high maintenance as the "professionals" :)

It's crazy to see how much goes into these shoots

"Look at all this candy Maisie!"

Francie's explaining to Jannie and to her little sister that she'll have to wait six months to go trick-or-treating for real :)

Big Sis at Gymnastics

Big sister Francie is taking her new role on like a rock star ;) She sported her fancy-sparkled Big Sis outfit her friend Rose gave her to gymnastics on Thursday and Emmy came with us to watch Francie in her glory. She loves "nastas" and was a show off on the rings for Emmy. She really loves her "litta sista" and is always giving her kisses and saying "Maisie- cute!" I'm glad she decided Maisie can live with us- if Francie is happy everybody is happy :)

Mom and her girls!

"Weeeeeee!" Now are THOSE Francie-pants or what!?

I'm the BIG SISTER!

Adorable Little Landry comes to gymnastics now too!

Swinging high

She finally got the hang of "holding tight" to the hula-hoop while we pull her around the slick gym floor on a carpet mat!

Singing 'wheels on the bus' under the parachute on moms lap (Maisie was on there somewhere too:)

Look at that form finishing a sommersault with "Teacha Robbie"

and on the rings! Future gymnast? Highly unlikley Francie-pants...

Thanks for coming with us to nastas EMMY!!!

She's outta here...

Maisie Picks Her Godparents

Maisie picked her godparents and she sure picked well! (ok, maybe we helped :) Uncle Jerry, my younger brother is the godfather (or as Sansie says God-sha-der) and Cousin Emmy is the very special godmother. Emmy's mom Kaky was my god-mother and we know Kaky is watching down on Maisie and Emmy from her new place in heaven, they already have a very special connection.

Godmother Emmy! Emmy came over to Jannie's Thursday night for a slumba-party and we asked her that night to be the godmother. She was surprised and very touched. We know she is going to be the best god-mother around!!! Maisie is SO comfortable with her and sleeps peacefully in her arms for hours. We are confident Emmy will take the lead on the spiritual guidance to make up for whatever Uncle Jerry leaves out (see below;)

Godfather Uncle Jerry! Jerry (Gerald Sheehy) stopped by after work Thursday so we could ask him to be the god-father. He was very excited and emailed us later that night to say "glad I can be godfather to another Sheehy! Thanks for the honor, tell Masie I'll try not to be drunk at all her important life events..." Oh Jerry ;)

Big sister approves of the god-parent choices (her's are Uncle James and Aunt Kat)

Emmy is soo much fun when she comes over! She jumped right in to help when I suggested I might want to "make a room" for Maisie. Within an hour we had furniture moved around and a new space for little Maisie!

Maisie's new "room" start~ I realized I needed another diaper changing table (got a great one on Craigslist yesterday!) AND a place to keep all Maisie's clothes organized so Dad doesn't put Francie in "last-season-little-too-small" outfits again...

See what I mean? just look at those JORTS ;)

We all love you MaryMarjorie!

Home with Maisie

Maisie has been so much fun to have home with us! (her first photo at home above) She is a very sweet, mellow baby and already does "Eva Sansie says" (just kidding...) but she seems to take her role as little sister very well. She is adjusting to sleeping at night and hanging out during the day and hardly cries much. She loves to snuggle up and is really alert when she is awake. We've been enjoying hanging out at home and in the backyard (in this heat!) with our girls and are so happy to be a family of four.

Maisie stretched out in the bassinet Kaky gave me- she had for the twins ;)
(that means Emmy slept here too Maisie!)

Sweet baby girl

Hanging out in big sis' crib (at her request of course) Maisie looks like she's cringing, just waiting to be jumped on or smushed!

Francie "pushing" the stroller

Pretty on pink

"Oooo... maybe if I hide here she won't find me..."

"Peek-a-boo Maisie-Moo!"

Playing with her big sis- Francie has really 'come around' and likes to play with her sister whereas day 1 and 2 she wouldn't much acknowledge she existed :) She is quite protective of her little sister now.

This picture pretty much speaks for itself ;)

Long legs and big feet barely fit in the newborn KissyKissy

Dad's new dubba stolla (his favorite running/behind-the-bike/walking to Willow Market stroller- we had to upgrade to the double. Anyone need a single Chariot?!)

Francie playing with the neighbors, still a little outta sorts

Dad getting his girls settled in the Chariot for a walk while the neighbors (over to watch the action as he installed the "infant sling") file home

"Hummm... what is this thing sharing my space?"

Maisie in her little sling-seat (probably not recommended for a 4 day old baby?) We were careful and walked slowly :)

Ahhh... finally Heff has his drinking buddy back! You were worth the wait Maisie :)

Going Home

Monday morning Heff and I were up bright and early excited to take Maisie home (and although I do love my hospital adventure, excited to sleep in a real bed- especially Heff!) Francie and Jannie came to help us move out as a family, Rashelle from my office dropped by with some "thank you photo cards" we had ordered for our doctors and nurses- Heff paired with some Pacific Sun Olive Oil from Red Bluff and we made the rounds back in L&D to thank everyone! Dr. Noland came by at 10:30am to give Maisie the a-okay discharge stamp and we were headed for home...

Maisie in her going home outfit- Jannie made a set of these booties and little hat in pink and blue ;) the matching crossover sweater was waiting to be embellished with pink or blue trim but it was 90 degrees when we left the hospital so she'll have to wait to wear the coordinating set!

"You're telling me she's really coming HOME with us?!"

"SAM-ILY HUG!"

First time in her new carseat!

Not so sure yet...

I think I like having a little buddy back here! (and doll-honey in her "carseat" right on the other side too :)

Everybody inside to show Maisie around her new house

Kisses and "rocking" for new baby sister before she showed her the chickens. Maisie is wondering what kind of crazy family she landed with!

First nap in mom and dad's bed

First visitor at home- Georgia! (who came bearing Kara's cupcakes, yummmmm!)

I forgot how TINY newborn diapers are compared to the monster size four for my 19 month old :) We're got TWO BABIES now!!!

Maisies in Ireland!

Kate, Ella & Claire saw this little cafe on their road trip in Ireland and stopped to take a picture for Maisie! They are living in Germany for a few years and their mom, Kerri, is my BBF (best blog friend :) They emailed us this picture the day Maisie was born- it was so fun to see her name "in print" for the first time especially with those cute girls and their umbrellas! MaryMarjorie Sheehy is a good little Irish girl named after her Irish great grandmother and great aunt (more on that later!) so it was very fitting. Kerri is so sweet and also managed to send these gorgeous flowers from a great local florist in Woodside Emily Joubert- how she managed to figure all that out from the other side of the globe I'm still not sure, she's good. Thanks Shigos!!

Hanging Out in the Hospital

We had a much shorter hospital stay this time so we hung out in the hospital on Sunday with Francie and our parents before packing up to go home Monday morning! Our pediatrician, Dr. Cisco came by Saturday afternoon after Maisie was born but was going out of town the next day so we got to see his partner Dr. Noland Sunday and Monday too. Heff got some good snacks to keep us busy eating and we just enjoyed the quiet time. Francie came back and forth with Jannie and found her new stroller waiting for her and her doll (now named "Honey") and was crusing the halls showing off for the nurses!

Francie gave a little tiny doll to her little tiny sister (good thinking Jannie ;)

Honey has a stroller blanket just like Maisie's!

Dad and his girls

"Come on Jannie let's blow this joint."

Swaddled up to hang with mom and dad after big sister leaves

My original doctor (for Francie) Nicole Hong stopped by to say hello! I had to switch since her practice wouldn't let their doctors to VBAC's but she was at the hospital while we were delivering and said she was watching my strip from the nurses station the whole delivery! She is great :)

We started on the binky Sunday too... Francie didn't every really get that into them but this baby seems to want to pacify! Jannie made a trip to Day One for us for these "Naturesutten" natural rubber binkies, all the crazy for the under three-days old crowd

It's good to be a baby :) So this is Maisie's "Shiloh blanket" Jannie and I made together (she did all the hard work- I only knit a few squares!) We saw little Shiloh Jolie-Pitt in a magazine with a crochet version two years ago when I was pregnant with Francie and decided to try our own version... it took awhile! Jannie stayed up until 1am last week sewing ALL the little squares together, it's so soft- I love the blanket and I think Maisie does too.

Maisie Meets the Family

We had some bonding time with Little Miss Maisie in L&D before our nice nurses wheeled us on down to Maternity. Usually the transport guys do it but apparently all the babies decided to be born at the same time Saturday morning so the nurses stepped in to help transport. They didn't know what they were in for! We were greeted in the hallway by Jannie, Grampa, Oma, Aunt Maureen, Baby Patrick and... BIG SISTER FRANCIE!!

Wheeling out of L&D with another favorite nurse Monica who helped deliver Maisie

Mom holding Maisie for the ride, can't believe it's another baby girl!!

Silly pictures of me but my reaction when I saw my first baby girl MaryFrances ;)

Dad took Maisie into the nursery for her first bath while the troops watched from the nursery windows. Francie was a little skeptical of this "Dad on the other side" and kept saying "Daddy come out!"

Maisie looking a little skeptical too

Cousin Patrick, doens't look so much like a little baby anymore

Good thing Jannie makes cuter hats!

Mary Marjorie all cleaned up (Heff was in there for over an hour with FIVE other babies getting the same royal treatment)

Francie meeting her new dolly in the hospital too... we both got our babies "OUT"!

and trying to give the "REAL tiny baby" Maisie her doll's bottle

Daddy and his Number 1 Doo

We had lots of visitors in Maisie's first day of life!

Grampa! very proud with his second baby granddaughter :)

Uncle James and Auntie Em

Francie had to make sure Jannie knew who was boss... and Jannie spoiled her with a little chocolate to remind her "Sansie is!" (when Jannie asks her "What does Jannie do Francie?" the little stinker says "Eva Sansie wants." :)

That's a happy girl!

Uncle Jerry and A-woo-son

Uncle Mark, Sarah and Baby Clara too! (they snuck her in for a photo op :)

COUSINS!! 3 1/2 weeks apart

Sarah and Oma with Maisie

Opa and his 7th grandchild (6th granddaughter!)

Worn out just keeping the family trees straight ;)

PROUD parents

EMMY!!!

Looking more like Francie every hour!

Uncle Andy and Uncle Rich (GREAT uncles that is)

Officially... "first-cousins-once-removed" but they prefer COUSINS Emmy, Connor and Drew

SISTERS

The Arrival of MaryMarjorie

We were scheduled for a c-section Friday morning, April 17 at 10am. Francie was a breech baby so after 14 Bradley "natural childbirth classes" last time around I ended up with a c-section to deliver Francie. I didn't mind the surgery and recovery wasn't bad but we were hoping to be able to experience labor and a "VBAC" if we could this time. I had to switch doctors and clinics a few times to find a doctor who would agree to try a VBAC- it's risky enough no one wants to take on a new patient these days. My dad had worked with Dr. Maurice Druzin, the Cheif of Maternal Fetal Medicine and High Risk Births at Stanford Hospital, before and he agreed to let me try the VBAC under his care at the high risk clinic. Things fell into place during the pregnancy but this little baby just didn't want to come out! We clicked off the days thinking for sure I would go a little early or right around my due date... I had contractions on and off but they never stuck around long enough. Dr. Druzin gave me 8 days over my due date before they would have to do a c-section. As we got closer I tried everything under the sun to go into labor- raspberry leaf tea, primrose oil, pineapple, spicy foods, walking and walking, curb walking and even acupuncture daily in the last week (that I think actually worked to 'drop the baby'!) I finally gave in on Thursday night and changed gears to expect surgery the next morning- just happy we would finally meet our baby. I unpacked our "labor and delivery" bag and tried to get a good night's sleep :)

Leaving for the hospital- a family of three!

Francie says "Baby in Mommy's belly" and... "Baby in Sansie's belly too!"

We dropped Francie off for a leisurely day at Jannie and Grandpa's to play! Emmy came over too (hence the adorable photos:) My dad took the day off work again to await the arrival- he took the day off for Francie's birthday and my mom said he never even did that for any of his kids to be born! Thanks Dad :) and thanks Jannie for taking such good care of our Little Doo while we were in the hospital! She loved her "slumba pa-ties"

(*Warning there could be TMI in this post and a little boring- I banned pictures until the baby was born!)

Heff and I arrived at the hospital at 8:30am for pre-op and within the hour we were ready to be wheeled in to surgery for a c-section. The anesthesiologist was getting ready when Dr. Druzin's resident, Inna, came in and introduced herself. She said she spoke with Druzin about my hopes for a VBAC and was willing to check me one last time to make sure we were making the right choice to do surgery. Inna said I was 1cm dilated and having a few contractions and that she would be willing to let me wait a few hours and see what they could do to get me into labor. 1cm didn't sound very promising, but we also knew Dr. Druzin was only available to do my c-section if we had been bumped to the afternoon schedule so we figured we might as well try and at the very least it would buy us some time to have Dr. Druzin do the surgery. So they moved us to an L&D room and we set up camp.

Since I had a recent c-section scar, most of the induction methods commonly used were out the window for me - no drugs to start labor could be used but they suggested a relatively new method to induce using a Foley Catheter to help dilate (I'll spare too many details;) Heff sent our parents and Francie, waiting patiently in the outdoor garden area, off to get lunch. We were kind of excited we got to see what a "real labor & delivery" room was like and thought at least we'd get to experience a little of this! They told us to expect to "try" things for three hours and then decide to continue if it worked or just go in for surgery.

Things kicked into high gear pretty fast! The contractions started quickly and in ernest. We tried to remember our Bradley methods and Heff kept his thumbs on an ankle pressure point every contraction (thanks acupuncture ;) We had fantastic nurses and doctors encouraging us and keeping a very close eye on things to make sure we weren't pressing the envelope. Three hours passed and things were moving SLOWLY but surely. Dr. Druzin arrived and was pleased with the forward momentum and let us keep going. Three hours turned into nine hours of contractions every 2-3 minutes apart and we decided it was time for that epidural :) It kicked in just as I was thinking I couldn't take another contraction! I think it was about 8:00pm and after that I was a happy camper and could feel the pressure of each contraction but no real pain. Ahhhh.

After the foley thing did it's job and got me to 5cm I was having regular contractions on my own but not enough to get me much past 5cm after four more hours. At 11pm they started a very small Pitocin drip (which can't be used to start labor in a VBAC but is ok once labor is progressing.) but after less than an hour of pitocin the baby's heart rate seemed to drop after each contraction so they quickly stopped the drip.

At 1am they broke my water- the last resort- and put a fetal monitor on the baby's head to more closely watch. Between 1-5am we had nurses (one of our favorites, Gina from Chico!) residents and attendings in and out of our room with different opinions of what to do next. It still wasn't time for a c-section but we had sort of run out of options.

Finally the attending decided the "drops" in baby's heart rate were not as worrisome as the resident thought and called back the Pitocin. They "titrated" different levels in small amounts until we seemed to find a place baby tolerated and that kept contractions strong and regular. This was at about 5:30am but I was STILL at 5cm.

They waited until 8:00am to check me again and the nurses and doctors cheered and danced around the room and said "You're at EIGHT CM!" Contractions got stronger and they said they would check me again at 10am. The doctor told me if I got to 10cm okay, to expect to push for 1-3 hours and that they would probably need to use forceps or vacuum for delivery and if those didn't work I'd still need a c-section. We were okay with this every step of the way since that is what we had expected the end result would be anyway- this "labor" thing seemed like a bonus we didn't think we'd even be able to experience.

By 9:45am I told Heff to get the doctor and by the time they checked I was a full 10cm! We were kind of in shock this somehow worked! They couldn't get the delivery supplies set up fast enough and after 15-20 minutes of pushing...

at 10:30am we heard "IT'S A GIRL"!!!!! It was such an incredible feeling!

Welcome to the world MaryMarjorie Sheehy Heffernan- you sure kept us in suspense getting here!

Tired but happy Mom (Heff was SO incredible the entire labor- thanks love:)

Oh bright lights little Maisie!

Getting her stats on the warming table - 7 pounds 1 oz (11 ounces smaller than Francie even though she was 'cooked' 2 weeks longer!) 19 inches. 9 on Apgar. We think she's perfect!
